Spectacular carved mother of pearl crescent moon brooch circa mid-19th century, 1850s-1860s.
A small gold shield at the midpoint of the crescent could have been for an engraving perhaps of the wearer's initials, but it has been left unengraved.
The moon is a symbol of the feminine divine and wisdom and was a popular motif in Victorian era jewelry.
