Lovely matte black French jet (glass) bead necklace circa late 19th, to early 20th century.
Since these have a matte finish and are not a shiny black, they would have been suitable for mourning attire (though it is impossible to know if they were worn for this purpose). French jet is simply black glass that was a more affordable alternative to real jet.
The clasp is a gold filled barrel clasp, and the beads are strung on a fine metal chain. Smaller beads between the larger ones might simulate a hand knotted bead chain.
The beads are not completely spherical or uniform; bead is slightly different, giving it a more organic look. A beautiful, elegant piece!
