A gorgeous gold filled Art Nouveau locket featuring a "witch's heart," water lilies, and the engraved letters "BC," circa early 1900s.

A witch's heart is one with a "tail" that curves to the right. This symbol has been documented as far back as the 15th century, but it gained popularity in jewelry during the 17th century in Scotland. Known as a Luckenbooth, named for the booths where they were sold in Edinburgh, they were given as gifts to ward off evil spirits and grant protection to loved ones.

They were often made as brooches with crowns and sometimes with double hearts rather than one.

I always get excited when I find one of these! They are one of my absolute favorite symbols in antique jewelry, but I have never seen one quite like this.

Chain is not included with this listing. Listing is for the locket only.
