This beautiful jacket dates from around 1890 and is made of silk seal plush in dark brown, an incredibly soft faux "fur" popular at the time. It is super comfortable! Like wearing a teddy bear :)

It is lined in luxurious dark purple silk. The lining is embroidered in bright yellow and has a cute little inner pocket.

Lovely stand up collar (could also be turned down if you prefer). Large metal hook and bar closures down the center front.

A museum deaccession, this piece is wonderfully preserved and still retains a museum identification tag inside the shoulder.

And speaking of the shoulders, just look at the fabulous puffed sleeves! I have found several examples of this style of jacket in catalogs and magazines dating from 1890, and a pattern for a similar jacket in an October issue of "The Delineator" magazine describes the sleeves as "sufficiently full at the tops to stand well above the shoulders."

Photographed on a size 2 dress form over a black dress. Dress is not included.

+++ Measurements +++

This jacket is likely best for a size small, and keep in mind you will be wearing it over clothing:

38" bust

30" waist

26" long measured from the center back, base of collar to the bottom hem

23" sleeve length

14" between shoulder seams

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition overall with some minor flaws:

  • The silk lining has some wear around the stress areas, namely the collar area, sleeve lining, and underarm lining, but nothing major
  • A very small amount of wear around the closures, as shown

Wearable with care. This item should not be washed. It is clean and free from odors.
