This simple yet elegant locket in Whitby jet circa 1860s-1880s may have been a mourning piece. There are no fancy designs and it has a matte finish.
I have never seen one without any decoration before! And I rather like its sleek look. I have chosen to place it on a chunky gold filled watch chain dating from the late 19th century.
Jet was often copied in other more affordable materials such as vulcanite and glass, but real jet is more difficult to come by. It is very lightweight and can have a matte or shiny finish. Jet is a kind of fossilized wood, and is considered a gemstone, but it is not a true mineral.
Most Victorian jet came from Whitby, where some of the highest quality jet in the world was mined and made into jewelry and small trinkets.
