Wonderful small ambrotype photograph in a thermoplastic case.
The tiny photo is quite clear and sharp and depicts a young man with a chin curtain beard. This makes me think the photo likely dates from the early 1860s, as this was a style of facial hair that became increasingly popular due to Abraham Lincoln's partiality to it.
The photograph, on a thick piece of glass, is securely nestled into the case and surrounded by an ornate oval gilt frame.
It is a 1/16 size, which indicates it is 1/16 of a full plate, or the standard full size of manufactured photograph plate.
The case closes securely.
+++ Measurements +++
Case measures approximately 2 1/8" x 1 7/8" x 3/4"
+++ Condition +++
Lovely condition overall with some minor age-related wear, some superficial cracks around one of the hinges. Small chip on one edge. The case does not seem at risk of breaking but should be handled with care.
There was likely at one time a velvet lining on the opposite inside cover of the case, but there is no lining there now.
