Lovely Edwardian era silk taffeta Eton jacket with braided trim and hook and eye closures down the front. It has a cream silk lining and oversized, three-quarter length sleeves.

You may have seen these short jackets referred to in catalogs and patterns of the era as "Eton jackets", but why? ⁣

Apparently it is a carryover from a style of boys' school uniform at Eton College in England, when younger students were made to wear short jackets and upperclassmen wore longer ones. ⁣

I have seen the terms bolero and Eton jacket used interchangeably, but I'm still not clear on the real distinction between the two. The bolero is modeled after the short jacket worn by a Spanish matador, but seems to appear quite similar. ⁣

+++ Measurements +++

41" bust

34" waist

19" front length

14.5" back length

+++ Condition +++

Very nice condition overall with some flaws to note:

  • Some wear to the silk lining, most notably around the collar area
  • Some small holes in the sleeves, not very visible unless held up to the light
  • Small hole in the outer layer of one armpit (does not go through the lining)
  • A few very small pinholes on the back of the jacket

While this piece is wearable with care, due to its age, I would not recommend it for regular use.
