Fabulous silk dress circa late 1890s (around 1898) with a really wonderful green leaf print on a green and cream striped background.

Bodice is lightly boned. Features velveteen lapels and puffed sleeves, a cream silk front and bottom half and vibrant green silk ruffled trim. Cuffs are trimmed with tissue silk.

I love the shape of the sleeves! They are more fitted on the lower half, past the elbow, and on the upper half, volume has been added to the back side in a unique way (see photos for best description, since I'm not certain of what terminology to use for this method). Another interesting detail about the sleeves is that the original seams were picked out and resewn to make them larger. You can see the scarring from the original sewing in the photos.

Skirt is slightly trained. The hem of the skirt is heavy and lined with velveteen. Two rows of beautiful green silk ruffled trim match the trim on the bodice.

Hook and eye closures for both bodice and skirt. Two snaps have been added to the skirt opening, likely when the repairs to the skirt were made some time in the recent past.

+++ Measurements +++

34" bust

26" skirt and bodice waist

43" front length

48" back length

+++ Condition +++

Best for study or display, I would not recommend this piece for wearing due to age condition of the silk.

Some condition issues of note:

The cream silk on the bodice is shattering and/or torn in places, and it appears as though a high collar has been removed. Part of the cotton inner bodice/lining has been removed. A few small holes in the sleeves, close to the seams, due to the stress of picking and resewing.

The skirt is in overall better condition but there are some small tears around the top/adjacent to the waistband and some odd repairs that look like perhaps they were done with some kind of adhesive (see photos).

Presents beautifully for display and would also be a wonderful study piece for pattern making or reproduction.
