Gorgeous ladies' cycling boots circa 1890s!
Cycling became a popular sport for women in the 1890s, causing a surge in cycling related fashion, including specialized cycling outfits, skirts and bloomers, boots, and even corsets designed for this new sport.
These tall lace up boots were likely sold as cycling boots, and I have included some ads from the era (1897 and 1898) showing very similar styles advertised for this purpose.
They do not appear to have been worn much, and even still have a paper tag inside with a size "4B".
Very fitted, they follow the curve of ankle and calf and are made of a thin, flexible leather.
+++ Measurements +++
An approximate US ladies' size 4 to 5, they are quite narrow.
9.5" sole length
2.5" wide measured from the bottom at the ball of the foot
15.5" tall
+++ Condition +++
Condition overall is really wonderful with some minor wear from age. The leather is a bit wrinkled, but I think that is due to the thinness and flexibility. It is slightly dry, but not coming apart.
The soles have some peeling and show minor wear.
The laces appear to be original and are coming apart.
I would not recommend these for modern day sporting wear due to their age, but they would likely be wearable with care for a photoshoot. However they are best for display or study.
