Exquisite cotton wrapper dress circa 1890s. It is rare to see pieces like this survive in such excellent condition.
They were worn as work dresses, chore dresses, house dresses, which meant they were well loved and worn out, often patched and mended until they couldn't be worn any longer, then recycled to make other garments or quilts. I am very happy this one survived in one piece!
The fabric on this one is still very strong, and it is wearable. It has an inner bodice that buttons up the front with black glass buttons. A string tie at the neck. No closures on the outer dress.
Gathered at the back for a bustled look, the hem is slightly longer also in the back than in the front.
Belt sold separately.
+++ Measurements +++
Measurements taken with garment laid flat. Double when appropriate:
- 17.5" across bust (inner bodice)
- 16.5" across waist (inner bodice)
- 50" long in the front
- 54" long in the back
+++ Condition +++
It is in wonderful condition with one small mend and one tiny stain on the back. It was hemmed at some point (a bit roughly), but it could pretty easily be let out if desired. Wearable with care.
