This phenomenal chatelaine purse circa 1900 is the best example I have personally ever seen. Not only is the condition incredible for its age, but it features a rare and beautiful design that incorporates two snakes into the frame and one on the chatelaine clip.

The cut steel beading on the purse front forms the shape of a star, and twisted cut steel beaded fringe trims the bottom edge of the circular bag.

Silver plated with a beautiful antique patina, the frame has a push button at the top, which functions beautifully, to open the purse.

The main body of the purse, including interior and back side, are made of leather, which is still quite supple and very soft. There is a small pocket inside the purse as well.

This bag was made to be attached to the belt and worn as a functional fashion accessory. This particular style and shape was very popular around the turn of the century, and I was able to find a very similar one (although without the snakes) in a Sears catalog dating from 1900. I included a screenshot image of that in the photos of this listing.

+++ Measurements +++

Full length with clip and chain is 11 3/4"

Purse length in total including top button to the bottom of fringe is 7"

Purse is 6 1/4" in diameter

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition overall, especially considering its age. Some patina and loss to the silver plating, which personally I find quite beautiful. There is also some patina to the cut steel beading. Nothing I would consider rust, but just some darkening to some of the beads. For the most part, they are excellent. Please see all photos.

The back of the purse and interior are both leather, which has darkened naturally with age, but there are no major flaws to call attention to.

The chatelaine clip itself also has become slightly bent but could be reshaped if desired quite easily or left and worn as is without issue.

Definitely wearable and usable with care.
