This fantastic necklace consists of a chunky chain and beautifully detailed locket fashioned in vulcanite, a popular thermoplastic often used in the later 19th century to simulate jet.
The locket features a grape cluster and vine motif, which is often a symbol of Dionysus but could also hold meaning associated with the blood of Christ, resurrection, and eternal life. Other meanings associated with the grape vine are friendship, connection, and wealth.
The locket has intricately carved details inside. The chain has a gold tone clasp, likely added sometime later.
Note: Vulcanite should be stored out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and discoloration.
+++ Measurements +++
The chain measures 17" with a 1 1/2" drop. The locket measures 1 3/8" by 1 1/4"
