Fantastic "coral" celluloid fede brooch circa 1880s-1890s. Not true coral, but a plant based plastic made to appear as coral.

The "fede" motif is one of my favorites and represents two clasped hands. It is Roman in origin and comes from the Italian for "faith," and has come to symbolize "hands clasped in trust."

Given in friendship, love, and betrothal, pieces with this motif make wonderful gifts. You will often see this motif on Victorian era calling cards.

The hands on this brooch have beautiful cuffs and there is a rose clasped between them.

Listing is for the brooch only. Box is not included with this listing.
