Before the days of sunglasses, there were tinted glasses, believed by some to improve vision, but also worn for the sake of fashion by others. Some were worn as eye protection from the elements.

I have seen these glasses with four lenses called "railroad glasses" or "carriage glasses", as they may have been worn to protect the eyes from dirt and debris when riding in a carriage or on a train. An early form of goggles, in a sense, giving the eyes protection from multiple angles.

These gorgeous green tinted eyeglasses date from the mid-later 19th century. They have brass frames with extending arms and rectangular lenses. The side lenses are on hinges.

They are marked "Pfau" on one arm, likely the maker, though I have not been able to find any history on this name.

+++ Measurements +++

They measure approximately 4 3/8" wide across the front.

+++ Condition +++

Good overall condition with some wear and flaws to note:

  • The side lenses do not fit very snugly in the frames and can be popped out with your hands, but they do not fall out on their own
  • Some imperfections, possibly chips? on the edge of one of the lenses in the front
  • Some bending/irregularities in the frame

These are wearable with care at your own risk (the lenses are made of glass, and therefore do not meet modern safety regulations).
