A truly exquisite molded hand mirror by The Boston Diatite Company, circa late 19th century, likely 1870s-1880s.

The high relief design on the back features a floral motif and the words "The Nodding Violet."

Marked "Diatite" on the handle with the patent dates 1868 and 1872.

Diatite was a hard-rubber substitute, similar in appearance to Gutta Percha and vulcanite, but it made of diatomaceous earth and shellac. The Boston Diatite Company appears to have been in business until 1890.

The design, which would have been pressed from a mold, features detailed peacock feathers and a small, rustic cottage or shack. The handle is marked Diatite, with a patent date I can't quite make out, but I have seen similar pieces marked 1868 an 1878.

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition overall. I did not see any cracks in the material. There are some small blemishes beneath the glass.
