Circa early 20th century, this beautiful lorgnette (folding glasses) comes on a silver tone snake chain from around the same era (not original to this piece).

Marked sterling on the inside of the nose bridge with an accompanying partial maker's mark --& R.

Also sometimes referred to as opera glasses, lorgnettes were popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At first worn as a practical accessory, they were later worn mostly as fashionable jewelry.

The lenses in this pair are magnifying and can be used as reading glasses.

Functions by pressing the small button on the handle to pop the glasses out, which can then be folded back and click into place when not used.

+++ Measurements +++

Folded - 2.75"

Open - 5"

Chain is 16" long

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition with minor wear and patina from age. I have not polished the silver. The chain, which may be silver plated, has some wear to the finish.
