Gorgeous Georgian era witch's heart brooch in silver with flat cut garnets and paste stones. Circa early 19th century, 1800-1840.

A witch's heart is one with a "tail" that curves to one side, usually the right.

They were often made as brooches with crowns and sometimes with double hearts rather than one, and were given as tokens of love and protection from evil.

Although this particular symbol has been documented as far back as the 15th century, heart-shaped brooches such as this one gained popularity in jewelry during the 17th century in Scotland. Known as a Luckenbooth, named for the booths where they were sold in Edinburgh. However, not all Luckenbooth brooches are witch's hearts (with the curved tail). Some are hearts or double hearts topped with crowns. Most are silver.

This piece is unmarked but tested as silver.
