Victorian's were serious about their mourning. Queen Victoria began her long period of mourning after the death of Prince Albert on the 14th December 1861, and began a strong tradition of mourning during that era.

Mourning jewelry became extremely popular, and this piece is an excellent example of this. Set into a heavy 9k rose gold frame, a double-sided, reverse painted glass holds locks of blonde and brunette braided hair and depicts a cross surrounded by forget-me-nots and a banner with the words "In Memory Of."

The cross also bears the initials ISH, which is a "Christogram," an abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ representing the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, ΙΗΣΟΥΣ, iota-eta-sigma, or ΙΗΣ.

It can be worn as a brooch or attached to a necklace.

+++ Condition +++

This piece is in wonderful condition for its age. There is some very minor wear to the paint and two small places in the gold frame where the gold is separated. However the piece is structurally very sound and wearable.
