Gorgeous ivory silk gown circa late 1890s, likely close to 1899. The style and color of this gown lead me to believe it was a wedding dress, but of course I cannot be entirely certain. It is also in such excellent condition, as a dress worn only once would be.
The dress would have almost certainly had a high collar sewn into the bodice, and there is evidence of the stitching from where this was removed.
Bodice is boned and lined with cotton. Hook and eye closures down the center front and hook and thread closures down the side. Hooks on the inside of the bodice attach to the skirt at the back.
Skirt is very slightly trained and has hook and eye closures at the back of the waist and soft velvet hem lining.
The silk has a stiff, crinkly texture that gives the dress structure.
+++ Measurements +++
Bodice:
- 24" waist
- 32" bust
- 15.5" length
Skirt:
- 23" waist
- 45.5" front length
- 49.5" back length
+++ Condition +++
Really wonderful condition. There are a few flaws to note, normal wear commensurate with age:
- Some faint staines throughout, nothing major
- One eye closure missing from skirt waist
- Minor wear, soiling of the hem lining
This piece is likely wearable with extra care and would make a wonderful display or study piece.
