Circa early 1900s bodice with a label by Fenwick New Bond St, London.
In my research I discovered this department store is still open! Sadly the New Bond St location, which has been open since 1891, is closing down in 2024.
This stunning piece has the most beautiful color scheme of grey, coral, and cream. It is just as beautiful inside as it is outside, fully lined with silk and covered boning.
At the caps of each sleeve, there is a kind of "vent" (for lack of a better term, which I'm sure exists but is escaping me). I have never seen anything quite like it before. It was made this way, and is not a flaw. I believe it would make for more ease of movement with the sleeves being as fitted as they are, and it is also a unique detail that looks quite interesting and stylish.
Little decorative knots adorn the front of the bodice, which is gathered at the waist with a small "pooch" for a bit of a pigeon front look, as was the fashion at the time in the early 1900s.
There are only three hook and thread closures, two at the collar and one a bit further down just below the bust. No closures at the waist, and I do not see evidence that they are missing. Perhaps it was meant to be tucked into a waistband or belt and pinned.
A very special piece and a real beauty. One of a kind! A fine addition to your collection and a wonderful study piece.
