This stunning dress is in amazing condition and a real head turner. Lovely earthy browns and greens of woven wool and cotton. Huge leg o' mutton / gigot sleeves! Circa 1894-1895.

The skirt attaches to the bodice in the back with two sturdy hooks. There is a deep pocket in the bustled back of the skirt, hidden amongst the pleats and anchored to the skirt waist lining. Lined with polished cotton, heavy corduroy gives structure and sturdiness to the hem.

Bodice is boned all around with encased boning channels and lined with cotton. Hook and eye closures down the center front of the inner bodice. Single hook and eye closure for the loose, outer bodice.

Attached note reads: "This dress is from the Clark estate. 1865-1870 (museum piece). Not to rent, only for our family."  On the other side, in a different hand, a note reads: "The dress belonged to a collector who rented dresses out to church groups for fashion show fundraisers. Her label is attached. Date is wrong. The dress is c. 1895."

The dress is certainly not from 1865-1870, but I wish I knew more about the Clark estate! I will include the hand written note.

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition overall, especially for her age. Bodice lining is pristine! Very sturdy. There are a few minor flaws to note:

  • A few loose yarns here and there, nothing major
  • Missing one eye from the hook/eye closures on the bodice
  • Faint discoloration in the skirt lining
  • Small tears in sleeve lining
  • Collar is not attached, and may have been tacked on at one time

Wearable with care. No odors. Also wonderful for study or display!
