Beautiful leather pumps or slippers circa 1880s.
Though it is difficult to date these to a specific decade, my research has led me to believe they are likely from around the 1880s.
I found a reference to some very similar styles in an 1886 B. Altman catalog, and I have included an image from one page in the photos. The "Opera Slippers" are quite similar, but with a slightly higher heel.
There is a maker's mark on the bottom of the shoe, but sadly I have not been able to make it out. There is also some writing in pencil.
The inside of the shoe is marked as a size 6F, and I have found them to be about equivalent to a modern size 8.
They do seem to have been made with a straight last, meaning there is no apparent "right" and "left" shoe. I actually found what appears to be a very similar shaped wooden last likely dating from around the same time or earlier, and I will be including it with the shoes!
+++ Measurements +++
Approximate US size 8.
9 3/4" inner sole length
3" wide at the ball of the foot
1 1/8" heel height
+++ Condition +++
Good condition overall, structurally, with some visible wear to the leather. These surprisingly feel quite sturdy. Though I would not recommend them for normal wear due to age, they would likely be fine for a photoshoot. Also beautiful for display or study/inspiration.
