I heard y'all like sleeves? This adorable bodice circa 1890s has the most epic leg o' mutton sleeves!
You'll also hear these called gigot sleeves. In French, "gigot" (pronounced zhee-go, say the 'g' like in the word massage) literally translates as hind quarter / leg of an animal, most commonly used to mean leg of mutton. But it definitely sounds fancier to say gigot :)
Not only is this piece beautiful to look at, but it is also a bit unusual. The inner bodice has hooks on one side and eyelets on the other. There are the same number of eyelets as hooks, and they match up/fit, but I've never seen this kind of closure before, and I'm not entirely certain it hasn't been altered or perhaps I'm mistaken on how it is supposed to work, but it certainly is a puzzler!
Outer bodice fabric has hook and thread closures (the bottom thread is broken/missing).
The cotton fabric is really wonderful, with intricate blue and white embroidered abstract designs.
