Incredible and rare, this silk gown has survived for over 170 years. Circa 1840s, it is a two piece dress, bodice and skirt. It is a very lightweight silk taffeta in a lovely champagne color with slightly darker stripes.

The bodice is lined and boned in the front with hook and eye closures down the back. The skirt is unlined with hook and eye closures on the side. There is a single, deep pocket.

There are small hooks and eyes at each cuff. The sleeves are very narrow and slim-fitting with small, tight cuffs.

The bust is padded with two round pads sewn in between the lining and the outer silk.

It is completely hand sewn.

+++ Condition +++

This is a very old garment, and is therefore delicate and should be handled with care. Overall the condition is quite good for a piece this old, but there are some flaws to note:

  • Some visible wear to the silk as well as color variation, faint stains, and fading
  • Several small holes and splits throughout the fabric and three or four holes larger than a quarter
  • A couple of the hook and eye closures on the bodice are missing
  • Some of the hem stitching has come loose
  • Small stains in the bodice lining
  • Some wear along the hem
  • Clean, no odors

I have done my best to show the details in the photos.

Due to the age of this piece, it is best for study or display, and I would not recommend it to be worn.
