Only the second one of these I've ever found in the wild! This is a beautiful Victorian carpet bag circa 1860s.
Made from a wool carpet remnant, this would have been a sturdy bag ideal for travel. There is a wooden dowel inserted into the top seam of the bag to add extra stability. It's a smaller size, so perhaps best for a day trip (picnic anyone?). It would easily fit a couple of books, snacks, or jars.
It is lined and has one pocket inside.
Two hook and eye closures hold the top flap down on the sides. At the center is a locking clasp that really does not function without the key (which I do not have).
Very hard to find and a great example with fabulous colors!
+++ Measurements +++
14" x 12"
+++ Condition +++
Good condition, especially considering age. Some minor wear and losses to the carpet. The lining has some small holes and stains, but it is mostly intact. The key for the locking clasp is missing and it does not stay clasped without it.
Definitely still sturdy and quite usable with care.
